Sacristan Ministry

Mission:

The Sacristan ministry is dedicated to serving God and the parish community by ensuring that the liturgy is celebrated with reverence, order, and beauty. Our mission is one of quiet stewardship—preparing the sacred space so that worshippers can encounter Christ in prayer and sacrament without distraction.
Sacristans are not only caretakers of objects but also ministers of presence. Their service is a form of prayer, offering time and attention to God’s house. By their devotion, they help the parish community enter more deeply into the mystery of the Eucharist and the sacraments.

Brief Description:

Liturgical Preparation

  • Arrange the altar, sanctuary, and sacristy before Mass and other liturgical celebrations like wedding, funeral & feast day.
  • Prepare sacred vessels, linens, candles, and liturgical books.
  • Ensure vestments & liturgical garments are ready for priests and deacons.

Custodianship of Sacred Items

  • Care for and maintain chalices, ciboria, monstrance, and other vessels.
  • Washing of altar linens with reverence.
  • Safeguard vestments, ensuring they are clean and properly stored.

Support During Liturgies

  • Assist clergy and ministers during Mass, funerals, weddings, and feast days.
  • Coordinate with altar servers, Eucharistic ministers and lectors to ensure smooth flow of the liturgy.
  • Respond to unexpected needs during celebrations with discretion and calm.

Sanctuary Care

  • Keep the sacristy, vestry and sanctuary clean, orderly, and prayerful ambience.
  • Oversee candles, holy water, incense, and other sacramentals.
  • Decorate the sanctuary appropriately for liturgical seasons (Advent, Lent, Easter, etc.).

Behind-the-Scenes Service

  • Work quietly and faithfully, often unseen, yet essential to the dignity of worship.
  • Serve as guardians of the sacred space, ensuring reverence and readiness at all times.
